About El Chiflón Protected Area

Located in the heart of the Chiapas highlands, El Chiflón Protected Area encompasses a rugged landscape characterized by steep canyons, dense pine-oak and cloud forests, and a series of breathtaking waterfalls cascading over limestone cliffs. The most famous of these is the Velo de Novia, or 'Bridal Veil,' a 120-meter waterfall that forms a shimmering curtain of water in a tranquil basin below. The area’s geography includes the El Chiflón River, which carves through the terrain, creating natural pools and rapids ideal for adventurous exploration.

Ecologically, El Chiflón supports an array of flora including hardwoods, orchids, and bromeliads, alongside wildlife such as the resplendent quetzal, spider monkeys, toucans, and a rich diversity of amphibians and reptiles. The protected status helps safeguard these fragile ecosystems and the headwaters vital to downstream communities.

Historically, the region holds significance for the indigenous Tzotzil and Tzeltal peoples, whose cultural heritage remains vibrant in nearby communities. Tourism infrastructure focuses on sustainable interaction, with clearly marked trails, guided tours, and educational signage to promote conservation awareness.

Popular recreation includes hiking along trails that connect multiple waterfalls, swimming in natural pools beneath cascades, birdwatching, and photography. Visitors are drawn not only by the natural beauty but by the sense of tranquility and remoteness that defines El Chiflón. Its relatively accessible location near Ocosingo makes it an ideal day trip or weekend destination for nature lovers seeking cooler mountain air and pristine landscapes in southern Mexico.
